Answer engine
A system that replies to a question with a written answer instead of a list of links. The distinction is testable in about a minute.

What it means
Type a question into Google and you get ten results and decide for yourself. Ask ChatGPT the same thing and you get a paragraph naming two or three companies, assembled on the spot. The second is an answer engine. Google now does both on one page, which is why the line gets blurred in sales material.
Why it matters for an HVAC company
It changes what visibility means. In a list you are competing to be one of ten and a homeowner still compares. In an answer you are competing to be one of two or three named, and fourth place does not exist as a concept.
What would settle it
Run one question through three surfaces and look at the shape of what comes back. A list of links is a search engine. A written answer naming a handful of companies is an answer engine. Google's results page gives you both at once and the AI Overview is the answer-engine half.
A worked example
Ask who the best heating contractor in your town is. Google returns a map pack of 3 and 10 blue links. ChatGPT returns about 80 words naming 3 companies. Perplexity returns a similar paragraph with 6 numbered sources you can open. One question, three different competitive situations, and only the first lets a homeowner compare for themselves.
