AI Mode and AI Overviews are not the same thing
Google runs more than one answer surface, and proposals routinely use the names interchangeably. Which one was measured is a reasonable thing to ask, and the answer tells you a lot.
Three surfaces, one company
- AI Overviews
- The summary at the top of an ordinary results page. You did not opt into it, it appears conditionally, and the ten blue links are still underneath.
- AI Mode
- A separate conversational surface you choose to enter. It behaves more like a chat assistant and less like a results page, and it is not what a homeowner sees when they type into the ordinary search box.
- Gemini
- A different product again, sitting inside a Google account, with its own grounding behaviour.
Why it matters commercially
A measurement of one tells you little about the others. They draw differently and cite differently, so a report covering AI Mode does not describe what a homeowner sees in ordinary search, and a report covering AI Overviews does not describe Gemini.
The practical consequence is that a proposal promising visibility across Google's AI surfaces may mean one of them. Ask which. If the answer is vague, the measurement behind it is vague too.
A related tell worth knowing
Some pages still call this SGE, which was retired as a name in 2024. It is a harmless mistake in itself and a useful signal about when the page was last thought about. One company in our scored set uses the retired name throughout its answer-engine service page; one correctly writes AI Overviews and notes the former name. Those two pages are describing the same market two years apart.
